The Street Where They Lived

“In The Street Where They Lived Richard O’Mara, a former reporter, columnist, foreign correspondent and editor for the Baltimore Sun, evokes the years of the Great Depression, an epoch that recedes further and further from living memory, as the people who lived through that era shuffle off, one by one, into the mists of the past. Reading these engrossing essays, the reader is gripped by two emotions: admiration at the author’s story-telling skill, and wonder – wonderment that a young man with such a background, raised in a home still steeped in the traditions of the Irish immigrants who poured into this country from their “ruined homeland,” struggling against the crushing poverty endured by so many during the years of the Great Depression, could develop into such a skilled and remarkable writer….”

RHYME OF THE FALL OF BERLIN

Rhyme of the Fall of Berlin, about 4,000 lines of rhyme in eight-line stanzas chronicling the beginning of World War II, the battle of Stalingrad, the fall of Berlin, and the death of Hitler and Eva Braun, can be enjoyed “by readers from the age of ten to the age of ninety and up,” the author says.

The reader must bear in mind the mock-epic nature of the poem when Hollenbaugh/Firebaugh compares himself to Homer, Byron and other great names. His immodest boasts notwithstanding, and despite the absurdities, the poet’s rhyming skill manages to captivate the reader through stanza after stanza, with “This gripping and teeming tale / That dwarfs the epic saga of Troy / And Melville’s mightiest whale.”

Alternating between modern prose and a parody of the classics, the long poem sometimes paraphrases Homer, Dante, Taylor Coleridge, Milton, and unabashedly purports to quote Eisenhower and General Omar Bradley (“Finer soldiers I never saw,” speaking of the author and his comrades). Subtle, allusive, with occasional flights of soaring rhetoric, Rhyme of the Fall of Berlin can be favorably compared to other long-surviving and classic rhyming poems.

Spinoza Study Guide
Price: $2.95

SPINOZA'S GOD

Franklin L. Dixon studied the obscure philosophy of Baruch Spinoza for forty years, before writing this lucid, entertaining, and original interpretation. Dixon does what the 17th century Dutch-born Portuguese-Jewish philosopher failed to do: he provides an explanation of exactly what Spinoza was talking about, while defending Spinoza's God from assaults levied against it by post-modern philosophers and fundamentalist theologians.

A free study guide ($2.95 value) will be included with orders of 3 or more copies of this book.

"Whether you are a novice to Spinoza or an avid reader of his works, if you wish to understand this great philosopher, Dixon's book is indispensable.
--Dan Spiro, author of The Creed Room and Moses The Heretic; Coordinator of the Washington, D.C. Spinoza Society.

THE CANYON CHRONICLES
The Canyon Chronicles By K. Gray Jones Volume I, a historical novel based on the early history of the Mormon Church, from the times of Brigham Young to the 1900's. From ancient newspaper articles, antiquarian books, and the archives of the Mormon Church itself, K. Gray Jones has crafted a page-turner of a novel, culminating (Volume II) in a chilling and horrifying account of the Mountain Meadows massacre.

"- A powerful, moving and fascinating novel. As a resident in the state of Utah, the author shows a rare courage in his depiction of the turbulent events surrounding the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the nineteenth century."
- Janet Davidson, The Stratford Books Review.

NESSUS THE CENTAUR

The ancient myth of Hercules, Dejanira and Nessus the Centaur is retold in this novel by the author’s engaging character, Jonathan Nestus, a reincarnation of the Centaur, reliving periodic episodes in the life and times of Nessus, horse’s parts and all. In this modern retelling of the myth, Nessus is the tragic, lovelorn hero and Hercules is the despicable, murderous villain. In the main body of the novel, populated by centaurs, satyrs, nymphs and mermaids, Henry Hollenbaugh spins a fantastic tale, which almost renders the myth believable. Meanwhile, in his book-within- a-book, A Short History of the Centaurs, replete with literary and classical allusions and the retelling of many of the Greek myths from a modern perspective, his character Jonathan Nestus provides pseudo-scientific reasons and evidence for the abundance of weird creatures in ancient times.

"-Whether the reader is familiar with Greek mythology or not, this tragic-comic love story is a thoroughly entertaining read. From the day Nessus conceives his fatal attraction for Dejanira to the final tragic conclusion on the banks of the River Avenus, Hollenbaugh displays a consummate skill in recreating a panorama of those fabulous times."
- David West, The Jordan Review of Books.

THE WIND THIEF

A tale
of obsession and redemption, The Wind Thief is the story of two souls who are swept from land to land, one in search of a home, the other in search of a war, and both ever a step behind the peace they seek.

"-From the opening scene in the desolation of the Sahara Desert to the final conclusion on a storm-blasted mountaintop, Martha Engber weaves a haunting tale of the ultimate triumph of love between Ajay, the thief from Mumbai, and Madina, a strangely obsessed desert prostitute. Reminiscent of the late Garcia Marquez’s Erendira and Her Heartless Grandmother."

RIO SAN PEDRO

A fictionalized memoir-journal of the author's years as a crocodile hunter in Central America in the 1950's. A tale of loneliness and obsession. Throughout this novel-journal, the narrator alternates between pensive reflectiveness, wry self-deprecation of his youthful folly, and regret for a way of life lost forever. Additionally, there is a genuine historical value to the novel. Of late, oil companies have penetrated into the region, as well as guided tours to the many Mayan ruins that until recently had remained covered by the jungle growth for over a thousand years. The El Peten so vividly described by the author, with the way of life of its inhabitants and the way of life of a crocodile hunter, perhaps no longer exists.

"There is a wonderful sense of presence in this novel..."
-Jonathan Galassi,
of Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

THE OTHER FACE OF MURDER

A tragic-comic tale by a doctor-writer involving murder among friends. In writing The Other Face of Murder, Dr. Gil Porat joins the ranks of other distinguished medical professionals, from Crichton to Chekhov, who have made of writing their second love after medicine. In this outstanding first novel, Porat's penetrating prose upholds the tradition of those preceding him while simultaneously expanding the boundaries of literature. His ability to convert the tragic into the hilarious, without degrading an important topic, rewards the intelligent reader.

"-The Other Face of Murder' takes a look at the ethics of end-of-life issues through the prism of two extremely different deaths, and forces the reader to ponder whether the general definitions of murder and suicide even apply in these circumstances. The result is provocative, ambiguous and, at times, surprisingly funny."

ISLAND JOURNEYS, EXPLORING THE LEGACY OF FRANCE

Travel with the author to these islands with a common thread of French history. Island Journeys is an essential addition to the existing literature of travel and place. On one level, these are linked essays that explore specific connections between seven islands and certain aspects of French cultural history. But the book is also a personal meditation on the complex facets and human dimensions of islands in general.

"This short book of just 122 pages is enchanting . . . a charming, evocative, thought-provoking and occasionally witty piece of travel writing in the best traditions of that genre."
- Stephen A. Royle, Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, Book Review Editor of ISLAND STUDIES.

ALBERT SCHWEITZER'S LAMBARENE

A Legacy of Humanity for Our World Today

Published by Penobscott Press in Association with the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship

Jo and Walter Munz’s compelling story of Lambarene was first published in Europe in 2005-2006, in German and then in French. In the new version translated by Patti M. Marxsen, English-speaking readers can now enjoy and discover the living philosophy of one of the greatest humanitarians of the twentieth century and, thanks to new material, learn about the American connection with the world of Albert Schweitzer. Illustrated with over 140 photographs, as the most comprehensive gathering of voices, memories, histories, and documents available in English, this book offers a journey of discovery that is at once historical, personal, and spiritual. In many ways, Schweitzer’s philosophy of “Reverence for Life” is more relevant than ever. As Jo and Walter Munz demonstrate, it is a living philosophy available to all people, everywhere.
